Tom Brady’s pH Alkaline Lifestyle and Diet

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady — a five-time Super Bowl Champion and three-time NFL MVP — is widely considered to be one of the greatest athletes of all time. Lately, however, Brady has been following an alkaline lifestyle and diet.

In September 2017, Brady released his book, The TB12 Method: How to Achieve a Lifetime of Sustained Peak Performance. In this book, Brady detailed exactly what he eats every day. One main feature of his diet is liberal amounts of alkaline foods and liquids.

 

In the mornings, Brady doesn’t eat a full meal. When he wakes up at 6:00 am, he drinks 20 ounces of alkaline water infused with electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. He then drinks a smoothie and/or juices containing alkalizing grasses, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds. Two hours later, he has another glass of alkaline electrolyte-infused water, and a post-workout protein shake. Brady claims to drink somewhere between 12 and 25 glasses of alkaline water per day.

 

He also heavily encourages snacking. He usually snacks at around 11:00 am, just before lunch. For lunch, Brady will usually have a piece of fatty fish like salmon and a lot of green vegetables. In the afternoon, he may have another protein shake or protein bar, and around 6:00 pm, Brady eats dinner, which, again, consists of mostly green vegetables.

His book provides recipes for green juices, green soups, green salads, and a few carbohydrate recipes such as his pasta dish — which is odd, considering that he supposedly rarely eats carbs. But even Brady treats himself sometimes. He doesn’t often eat dessert, but he does give a recipe for his famous alkaline avocado ice cream.

 

His book also contains several alkalizing rules for eating. Brady won’t eat carbohydrates and protein together. He recommends eating carbs or protein with green vegetables instead, as he knows that this is better for assimilation and elimination.

Brady’s chef Allen Campbell says that 80 per cent of his diet is green vegetables and the rest of his diet is grass-fed organic steak and wild salmon.

Brady follows what he refers to as an alkaline lifestyle and diet created by Robert O. Young PhD, in order to minimize muscle inflammation caused by the buildup of lactic acid in the interstitial fluids of the Interstitium (see illustration below). This entails limiting ‘acidifying foods,’ which mostly includes starchy foods like potato, pasta, bread and ALL dairy products.

What is even more interesting is the list of acidic foods that Brady doesn’t eat. For Brady, caffeine, white sugar, white flour, dairy, and some nightshade vegetables —  eggplant and mushrooms — are completely off the table. He also won’t consume olive oil if it’s used in cooking — but he’ll have it raw. And he won’t eat high sugar fruit, unless it’s in a smoothie.

Since there are profound benefits with Brady’s pH alkaline diet, and it is clearly sustaining his play on the field, there a 100’s of specific health and fitness benefits of the pH alkaline lifestyle and diet which are backed by published scientific evidence.

 

He claims that limiting acidic foods helps control the body’s pH balance. What one eats, drinks, breaths and thinks has a huge effect on the body fluids, including the blood plasma, interstitial and intracellular fluid pH which is ideal at 7.365.

Brady also knows that the alkaline lifestyle and diet can decrease the lactic acids that causes inflammation in the body, leading to ALL sickness and disease, including connective tissue disorders that can end an athlete’s career.

 

At 41 years young, which is considered ancient in football years, Brady says he wants to play at least another five years. While he is certainly capable, his pH Miracle lifestyle and diet will be a major reason he WILL achieve HIS goal.

This was a question asked by Sahar Sahar (a face book friend) and here is my answer:

My own young and beautiful daughter Ashley, at the age of 21 followed the pH Miracle Alkaline Lifestyle and Diet with great success. She has now been in remission from brain cancer for over 15 years. She elected not to have brain surgery, radiation or chemotherapy.

 

Ashley was married and pregnant with her first child and in her 3rd trimester when she had a shocking seizure while at the movie theater. She was rushed to the hospital and after brain scans was found to have a large complex mass in her brain.

She was told that she needed emergency surgery and that since she was pregnant the Doctors recommended the termination of her pregnancy by C-section so they could begin treating her cancer.

With the help of her husband Matthew and Ashley’s strong faith and courage she decided no surgery and no taking the baby prematurely. She rested at home for several weeks until it was time to give birth.

She gave birth to a healthy boy (who is now 16 pictured below loving his sisters) and was told by the Doctors that she would not be able to have any more children because of her brain condition.

 

Ashley did not believe what she was hearing and had faith in God and the truth she had learned from her parents. She now has 4 beautiful healthy children – 1 boy and 3 girls. The newest addition came to their family just one year ago.

 

Her decision to follow the pH Miracle alkaline lifestyle and diet was her own decision and was supported by her loving husband and her parents.

 

As her Father who loves his daughter is so happy she is alive, healthy and able to attend to all her family needs. She is a wonderful example of Motherhood, a wonderful wife and has a strong abiding faith in God. I am so proud of Ashley and her bravery, courage and especially her faith to make such a bold decision at the young age of 21.

With love I share this very personal story that has a happy ending with many tears and trails knowing Ashley is healthy and alive today because she followed her heart with the knowledge that healing comes from within and is our personal responsibility.

Each person must decide for themselves (not the government) the path they will choose to go. It is all about free-agency to choose YOUR own healing path. Ashley listened to her parents, to her husband and especially to that still-small voice that speaks to our minds and through prayer and the support of family members made a wise choice. That choice is why she is alive today!

You might remember in the story of Alice in Wonderland when Alice came to a crossroads on her path and encountered the Cheshire Cat. As the story goes Alice asked the Cheshire Cat which road she should choose to go. The Cheshire Cat answered wisely, “If you do not know where you want to go any road will do.”

 

May God bless all of you who are at the crossroads of life with the depth of perception and the faith to choose YOUR own road wisely. Listen to that still-small voice that will speak to your mind and tell YOU the path YOU should choose. This voice will never deceive YOU or lead you astray!

My theory of one sickness, one disease and one health, are set forth in what I call “The New Biology,” not only considers how our diet affects our physiology, but also how our psychology affects our physiology and how our psychology affects our spirituality.

 

Not only does the health of your body affect the emotions of your mind, but your thoughts and feelings can affect the health of your entire body.

Bottom line, your mental state is ever so critical. In so many ways, your mental state, if it’s negative, can create more metabolic acids than the acidic foods and drinks that you’re ingesting.

In fact, you can create two or three times more metabolic acids from your thoughts or your mental and emotional state than from ingesting highly acidic foods like dairy, animal protein, sugar and alcohol.

So your thoughts are critical. Your thoughts or words do become matter, and can affect your physiology in a negative or positive way. Your thoughts do become biology. And the way that thoughts become biology is as follows:

1) When you have a thought or say a word, it requires electrical or electron energy for the brain cell(s) to produce those actions.

2) As you carry on with that thought, you are burning or consuming energy in the form of electrons.

3) When you are consuming energy or using electrons in your thoughts, you are producing biological waste products called acids which are an energetic waste product which can be measured in pH, oxidative reduction potential (ORP), hertz and decibels.

4) Next, if the metabolic acidic waste products from your thoughts are not properly eliminated through the four channels of elimination which are urination, perspiration, respiration or defecation, then the acidic waste products from your thoughts are moved out into your interstitial fluids and the pushed out into your connective and fatty tissues because it must not be allowed to affect the delicate pH of the blood. This delicate balance of the blood must remain quite constant at 7.365 and the interstitial fluids at 7.2, in order to remain healthy.

5) What happens next is this. As the excess and overload of acidic waste products are thrown out into the body tissues, this can easily lead to all sorts of symptomologies: lupus, fibromyalgia, Lyme’s, arthritis, muscle pain, fatigue, tiredness, obesity, cancerous breasts, a cancerous prostate, a cancerous stomach and/or bowels, indigestion, acid reflux, heart burn, heart attacks, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, dementia, autism, and the list goes on and on.

For example let’s say you’ve been doing sadness or depression. This downer feeling is coming from a negative experience that you keep looping and re-looping in your head. It’s like a mind movie. It’s a mini-drama that you keep playing over and over. And because you are constantly thinking about it, eventually you even start to be concerned or worried about the fact that you are so preoccupied with the whole affair. So now in addition to the sad drama, you are experiencing upset about the fact that you’re having the drama itself. All of this thinking requires energy and when you’re consuming energy you are also producing metabolic acidic waste products.

Do you know any angry people? You may not know it, but many people who become angry easily not only get angry at various people, events, and situations, but eventually they are irritated with themselves for being so angry at everything else. Anger, for instance, requires a tremendous amount of energy and emits a great deal of electrical energy. You have undoubtedly felt the vibrational energy of someone who is angry. Or maybe you have felt your own anger and how it can upset your physiology, i.e., especially an upset stomach and bowels with excess acids leading to indigestion, stomach pain, acid reflux or ulcers.

Even worse, many of these negative emotions are chronic and can be traced all the way back to early childhood experiences. So, at one level or another, it’s been going on for a long time and creating excessive acids all along.

For many people, early childhood represents some of the most fearful and vulnerable years. Have you ever wondered why you can’t remember much before age five or six? Many of those years are filled with fears and tears, mads and sads and how about the “bads”? Do you remember what happened when you were “bad?” Imagine the acidic waste produced from those experiences. In addition to the punitive experience itself, imagine the acidity a child deals with by simply:

a) remembering such a “bad” experience or

b) anticipating the possibility of another such “bad” experience…or

c) both! Some “children” remember these events forever!

Some chronic emotions begin early:

“O dear white children casual as birds, Playing among the ruined languages,

So small beside their large confusing words,

So gay against the greater silences, Of dreadful things you did…”

It is during these vulnerable and unprotected years that we often plant eternal seeds of emotion that will yield an unwelcomee harvest of acidic internal results, perhaps throughout one’s entire life.

The turmoil between parents and children, not to mention the conflicts between children and children, have been documented by many thousands of social science books and articles.

“Children begin by loving their parents; after a time they judge them;

Rarely, if ever, do they forgive them.”

So, let’s take a look at all of that emotion. Perhaps you are feeling a strong emotion. It could be any emotion.

First of all, emotions are energy in motion. When you are (e)motional, you are energetic, either in a positive or negative way. And if you are energetic, you are literally energy in (e)motion. You are now producing metabolic acidic waste products (lactic acid, uric acid, citric acid, just to name a few) at a very high rate which is a waste product of such (e)motions.

The rate of acid production in an (e)motional state can be even greater than that of someone who is jogging or working out. So, your thoughts do become biological or metabolic acids that can make you sick, tired, depressed, angry and even too fat or underweight.

When you start producing acids with your thoughts, words and actions, what happens inside? First, you activate the alkaline-buffering systems of the body in order to neutralize these (e)motional acids. The body begins making a primary alkaline buffer known as sodium bicarbonate. It’s actually made in the stomach cells from salt, water and carbon dioxide from the blood and during its production, it creates a waste product known as hydrochloric acid.

Hydrochloric acid is a poisonous acidic toxin and cannot remain in the blood or in the stomach. So it is dropped down into the gastric pits of the stomach. This is why people get upset stomachs or become constipated when they are (e)motional. This increase of sodium bicarbonate is critical in maintaining the alkaline design of the body, the pH of 7.365 for the blood and for maintaining alkalinity of the interstitial fluids of the interstitium which is the largest organ of the human body. If these metabolic acids, including hydrochloric acid, are not buffered and/or eliminated through the four channels of elimination, they can create serious health challenges in your body, in your mind, and in your soul.

On the other hand, positive (e)motions, such as love, peace, hope, faith, joy, forgiveness and charity can be alkalizing to the blood and tissues. These (e)motions require far less energy and can cause you to be relaxed in your mind and stop the playing of some acidic movies in your head. Students of higher consciousness know that you can even enter into a state of bliss wherein you have no thoughts and wherein you are producing zero metabolic acid.

For myself, I have decided to call this wonderful place “Young Charity.” That’s because I exercise and meditate every day. And I Love it! And it raises my level of consciousness and positive connection with the world. The connections between “Young” and “Charity” are numerous. My name is Young, of course, but more importantly, being young is a term we normally associate with being youthful, energetic, open, optimistic, and filled with excitement. And the ultimate purpose of life is Charity. And Charity is the sweetest expression of life. So “Young” and “Charity” go together.

To be sure, I Love my exercising and it Loves me back in terms of its gifts to me. I find myself Loving this state of bliss daily which I know is helping to alkalize my body. That is why I am addicted to why I Love this type of alkalizing exercise that I do every day. It’s called a Positive Addiction. I Love to have my friends and guests work out with me as I lead them through the steps. I teach them the “Young” version of Yoga. I tell them that it is known as “Younga Yoga.” They Love that. (Well, at least they laugh.) It incorporates proper breathing, stretching, toning, mediation, relaxation, and of course some sweating to remove yesterday’s dietary and metabolic acids and to help bring me into a state of happiness and bliss.

Through my personal and clinical research, I have found that maintaining the alkaline design of my body with an alkaline lifestyle and diet is the most important thing anyone can do to live a happier and more blissful life. (You find my published research papers at: http://www.drrobertyoung) Having an alkaline day is a way of life that I call “Young Living.” I guarantee you that what call “Young Charity” will go hand-in-hand with the goal of “Young Living.”

Now. this next thought is very important! The negative emotions of anger, resentment, and fear­ being the most powerful and acidifying of all emotions are all highly acidic to the blood, interstitial fluids and tissues and in many ways are paralyzing to all bodily functions. Over time, the fear of the unknown is probably the most powerful and acidic of them all. Fear is so devastating to the body that even if you’re on an alkaline diet, overcoming a serious health challenge is practically impossible.

 

In such a dire case, with what may seem to be little or no improvement, you might be wondering if the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet may not be working. You may be asking, “What else am I not doing that I should be? How come I feel the way that I’m feeling? I’m eating the right way, I’m drinking the right alkaline electron rich water, but I can’t seem to achieve the type of extraordinary health and energy that I’m seeking.”

In most cases like this, when you are eating and drinking correctly, it will come down to your negative acidic (e)motions or thoughts that are holding you back from achieving extraordinary health, fitness, mental clarity, happiness, and bliss. However, keep this in mind:

When you’re eating an alkaline diet and you are doing everything you know how to do, and yet you are overwhelmed with worry, doubt and negative emotions, thank God you’re eating an alkaline diet! If your body were not seriously in the alkaline direction, you might very well be experiencing a struggle for your life. Your acidic (e)motions can literally kill youSo the alkaline lifestyle and diet is the saving grace. Knowing that should give you the positive hope that you can hang on to, get through the emotional stress, and still come out physically and mentally able.

Hope and positive expectations are always the key, and knowing that you are on an alkaline diet should aid significantly in boosting your hope and confidence. You can live without food for forty days. You can live without water for about four days. You can live without air for maybe four minutes. But you cannot live without hope at all. Hope, positive expectations, confidence in what you are doing, and trust in your own good intentions is the key, and that’s what the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet will do for you. It will give you hope.

The leading cause of death in the world today is said to be heart attacks. But people are really having “thought attacks,” NOT “heart attacks.” There are studies showing that over 80% of all heart attacks are (e)motionally triggered. I have said that people don’t die of a heart attack. They die of a “thought attack” that medical science simply refers to as a heart attack because that’s the end result.

And if you have wondered if you can die from a broken heart, the answer is absolutely!And the cause? Acids from your energy in motion or (e)motion. The loss of a cherished love one can increase your metabolic acids from the (e)motion to the point that it can stop your heart from beating and pumping life-giving blood throughout your blood vessels. And we all know or should know that life and death is in the blood, the most important “organ” of the body.

So let’s take a moment to talk about what I do when I have a client who’s in a highly negative acid-forming (e)motional situation and all the body fluids, including the blood, will show a decline in the pH even when this person has been eating an alkaline diet.

In order to buffer the acidic forming (e)motions, the client will have to hyper-alkalize the blood, interstitial fluids and then the tissues in order to bring the body back into alkaline balance. When the client is hyper-alkalizing, the pH of the urine will increase into the high 8’s and even into the 9’s. Hyper-alkalization is necessary in order to overcompensate for the negative acidic producing (e)motions and to bring the body back to health, energy, vitality, hope, peace, harmony, love and finally charity.

So, does a person have a fair chance of healing themselves from a degenerative disease or dis-ease like heart disease or cancer? Can you ever achieve a state of blissful happiness? Can you recover from the devastating shock of a loss or from having been diagnosed with a scary-sounding health challenge? I say “absolutely, YES!” And, I just told you how.

Given the importance of (e)motions in cancer or acidic causation, etc., I have been particularly interested in the unique biochemistry of the “reptilian brain” which includes the Amygdala, a part of the brain associated with the senses and (e)motions and their storage or memory. Acid or sugar specifically activates the areas of the Amygdala. I have often wished that our traditional medical industry would spend some of their billions of research dollars checking out and verifying for the World what I have demonstrated for years that the pH Miracle electron-rich alkaline Lifestyle and Diet would be much more calming to lower (e)motions of grief, shame, guilt, anger, fear, etc­., responses of the reptilian brain as compared to a toxic chemical drug.

A chemical drug may temporarily calm a person down, but it will also inhibit the entire spectrum of normal and healthy functioning of the Amygdala. I am assuming here that most of us still value and are interested in the healthy functions of socialization, sexual attraction, and the enjoyment of the myriad of feelings associated with home and hearth. All of these wonderful human experiences and memories are also functions of the Amygdala every bit as much as the feisty adrenal functions responding to “fight and flight.”

In our attempts to find a chemical drug to treat almost everything, we (more often than not) create more problems than we eliminate one step forward and two steps backward. I know that attention deficit problems (ADHD) respond to an alkaline regimen….and hyperactivity is an Amygdala function. So it follows that an alkaline lifestyle and diet would produce less overall adrenal “stress” as well (really just the fight or flight mechanism by another name).

The pH Miracle electron-rich alkaline lifestyle and diet is calming to the mind and thus calms the negative (e)motions or energy in motion. This appropriate calming of the Amygdala function produces less “stress.” And, with less “stress” you have less metabolic “acid.” And, with less metabolic “acid” you have less sickness, dis-ease, so-called disease, depression and unhappiness.

Can our emotions cause cancer?

 

I have said that cancer is a four letter word “ACID.” When you are doing negative acidic emotions, such as anger, revenge, hate, sadness or depression, you are creating metabolic acids that can cause ANY and ALL cancerous conditions across all body fluids and tissues. If metabolic acids are not removed via urination, perspiration, defecation or respiration, then they are delivered to the interstitial fluids and then to the body tissues. When constant excess acidic waste from negative (e)motions are poured into the body tissues, the body tissues will degenerate causing a cancerous condition. Pharmaceutical companies are creating drugs addressing symptoms that may give you the illusion of feeling better, but they DO NOT deal with the causative metabolic acids from eating and drinking and negative acidic (e)motions. This can only lead to more physical and emotional pain and unnecessary suffering.

When you are in a negative (e)motional state, it can become impossible for you to heal your serious degenerative or acidic health challenge. But, I will say this: if you are willing to commit to change and begin the alkalizing process, even if you are not completely out of your state of fear, anger, depression or anger, you will begin to put more “Young Life,” “Young Energy,” and “Young Charity” into your body, mind and soul.

I have found over the years that when you start feeling better, you start thinking better. And when you start thinking better, you start doing better. So, you don’t have to have your (e)motions completely under control in order to start losing weight, feeling better, reversing a serious illness, having more sustainable energy and to start being happy and more mentally and spiritually connected.

When you start the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet program, you are then making a conscious decision to try to do a little better. And, when you get on this healing path that leads to “Young Living,” “Young Energy,” and “Young Charity,” this gradual alkalizing process you start having those little and then those big pH miracles. You start feeling better and you start thinking better. And, when you start feeling and thinking better, you realize at some point that you have forgotten your depression and your sadness. Feelings of anger have disappeared and even what you were upset about. You soon forget what you were fearful about in the first place.

Why? These changes come about because you feel so good. You are rewriting your epi-genetics with your positive (e)motions. You are taking your alkalizing eraser and erasing all your past life’s negative emotions. On the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet your (e)motions or energy in motion will finally be under your control. You will become the master of your mind, body and soul. You will be living an alkaline lifestyle and diet full of energy, happiness, bliss and love. You will be living and breathing “Young Charity.”

Drinking Soda Pop May Kill You!

Researchers from Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute and Harvard University have found that greater consumption of sugar-sweetened and low-calorie sodas is associated with a higher risk of stroke.
The study – recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition – is the first to examine soda’s effect on stroke risk. Previous research has linked sugar-sweetened beverage consumption with weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gout and coronary artery disease.
“Soda remains the largest source of added sugar in the diet,” said Adam Bernstein, M.D., Sc.D., study author and Research Director at Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute. “What we’re beginning to understand is that regular intake of these beverages sets off a chain reaction in the body that can potentially lead to many diseases – including stroke.”
The research analyzed soda consumption among 43,371 men who participated in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study between 1986 and 2008, and 84,085 women who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study between 1980 and 2008. During that time, 2,938 strokes were documented in women while 1,416 strokes were documented in men.
“The answer to the increase in strokes from drinking soda is quite simple – sugar is a metabolic acid and is poisonous to the body in all of its forms,” states Dr. Robert O. Young.  Dr. Young further states, “other acids including carbonic and phosphuric acid also contribute to inflammation, atherosclerosis, acidic plaque, thrombosis, obesity, glucose intolerance, insulin resisitance, diabetes high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.”  In sugar-sweetened sodas, the sugar load may lead to rapid increases in blood glucose and insulin which, over time, may lead to glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and inflammation. These physiologic changes influence atherosclerosis, plaque stability and thrombosis – all of which are risk factors of ischemic stroke. This risk for stroke appears hy igher in women than in men.
The pH of soda drinks are highly acidic with a pH of less than 3 and an oxidative reduction potential of over +450mV.  According to Dr. Young, “soda sucks the life right out of you!”
In addition, study findings show that men and women who consumed more than one serving of sugar-sweetened soda per day had higher rates of high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol and lower physical activity rates. Those who drank soda more frequently were also more likely to eat red meat and whole-fat dairy products. Men and women who consumed low-calorie soda had a higher incidence of chronic disease and a higher body mass index (BMI). The investigators controlled for these other factors in their analysis to determine the independent association of soda consumption on stroke risk.
“According to research from the USDA, sugar-sweetened beverage consumption has increased dramatically in the United States over the past three decades, and it’s affecting our health,” said Dr. Bernstein. “These findings reiterate the importance of encouraging individuals to substitute alternate beverages for soda.”
Dr. Young suggests, “drinking soda drinks compromises the alkaline design of the body setting the stage for sickness, dis-ease, disease and death.  People are digging their graves with their own teeth when they ingest foods and beverages that are highly acidic/toxic to the blood and tissues.  These acidic foods and beverages include, animal flesh, dairy products, alcohol. coffee, tea, soda drinks, sports drinks, high sugar fruit drinks, vinegar,  and sugar in all of its forms both natural and artificial.”

Woman’s Coca-Cola ‘habit’ cited in death

Experts say Natasha Harris Coca-Cola habit probably contributed to her death (AP/New Zealand Herald)When people attribute someone’s untimely death to a Coke overdose, they’re usually not talking about the world’s most popular soda.
But experts in New Zealand say Natasha Harris’ 2-gallon-a-day Coca-Cola consumption“probably” contributed to her death. The soda company responded to the alleged connection by noting that even water consumption can be fatalin excessive amounts.
“The first thing she would do in the morning was to have a drink of Coke beside her bed and the last thing she would do at night was have a drink of Coke,” Harris’ partner Chris Hodgkinson said in a deposition. “She was addicted to Coke.”
Hodgkinson testified that Harris drank between 2.1 gallons and 2.6 gallons of Coke every day.
The 30-year-old Harris died of a heart attack in February 2010. According to New Zealand’s Fairfax Media, pathologist Dr. Dan Mornin testified on Thursday that Harris likely suffered from hypokalemia (low potassium levels), which he believes was caused by her overall poor nutrition, including the unusually high levels of Coke consumption.
Though in fairness to the soda manufacturer, it was also revealed that Harris made other questionable health choices before her death, including smoking a reported 30 cigarettes per day and having poor eating habits. Dr. Mornin also said Harris had “toxic levels of caffeine” in her blood, though it’s not clear if those levels came exclusively from Coke or from a combination of other sources, including coffee.
Karen Thompson, a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola Oceania, defended the safety of her company’s products in a statement:
“We concur with the information shared by the coroner’s office that the grossly excessive ingestion of any food product, including water, over a short period of time with the inadequate consumption of essential nutrients, and the failure to seek appropriate medical intervention when needed, can be dramatically symptomatic.”
Harris reportedly experienced high blood pressure in the months leading up to her death. Hodgkinson called emergency services and tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but was not able to revive Harris after she collapsed in her home.

Acetaldehyde is hardly a household word in America, yet it is one of the most common neurotoxins in the lives of tens of millions of people. It is a simple substance its chemical formula is CH3CHO yet acetaldehyde insidiously promotes damage to brain structure and function through numerous pathways.

Sources of Vinegar or Acetaldehyde
There are five main routes that bring acetaldehyde (abbreviated here as “AH”) into the human brain. These are sugar consumption, alcohol consumption, Candida “the yeast syndrome,” exhaust from cars and trucks, and cigarette smoking.

Ethanol (more commonly known as alcohol) is the chemical contained in beer, wine, liquor and liqueurs that gets people drunk. These beverages serve as carriers to get ethanol into the drinker’s brain, promoting some degree of intoxication. Once in the body, alcohol is broken down into carbon dioxide and water. However, this process takes time and occurs in several steps. The first step occurs primarily in the liver, although other organs such as the brain and kidney can also perform this stage of alcohol detoxification to a slight extent. An enzyme called “alcohol dehydrogenase” converts alcohol into AH. Then another enzyme “aldehyde dehydrogenase” must break the AH down into acetate. Acetate can then serve as a fuel in cellular energy production. (Acetate is a form of acetic acid, the acid that makes vinegar sour.) 

However, the conversion of AH to acetate does not always occur quickly or smoothly and therein lies the problem. Research over the last several decades has shown that alcoholics tend to rapidly convert alcohol to AH, but then convert AH to acetate very slowly, thus giving AH a chance to work its mischief in the body.1  And depending on a person’s genetics, nutritional status, and exposure to other chemicals such as formaldehyde, which also utilize aldehyde dehydrogenase for their detoxification, even non-alcoholics may have difficulty rapidly detoxifying AH.

The second major route of AH into the brain is through its production by a yeast called Candida albicans. Candida is known to occur in the intestinal tract of virtually all humans to some degree. When present only in small amounts, being kept in check by a healthy immune system and the so-called “friendly flora,” such as Acidophilus and Bifidus bacteria, Candida is relatively harmless. Yet due to the modern overuse of antibiotics, birth control pills, and cortisone/prednisone drug therapy, as well as excessive stress (which naturally produces excess cortisone in the body), sugar consumption and malnutrition, millions of Americans now suffer from an excessive growth of Candida in their intestines the so-called “yeast syndrome.”2 Candida lives by fermenting sugars to produce energy. Unfortunately for the humans who harbor large colonies of Candida in their gut, the waste by-product of this sugar fermentation by Candida is AH.3  Biochemical research has shown that this AH may combine with red blood cells, proteins, enzymes, and other substances present in the gut or gut lining, and thus travel through the bloodstream to reach more distant parts of the body such as the brain.3  Research has also shown that AH can then detach from the red blood cells or proteins it traveled with through the bloodstream, thus enabling AH to damage cells far from the site of its intestinal production by Candida.3

For those suffering from the yeast syndrome, the ingestion of beer, wine, and liqueurs provides a double-barreled dose of AH. Not only is the alcohol in these beverages turned into AH, but the malt and grain in beer and the sugar in wine and liqueurs provide excellent fuel for Candida to produce the energy it needs to live.2 More AH is the inevitable by-product of the yeast’s sugar fermentation.

When oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, and natural gas are burned, ending up in the air, AH is produced.4 Thus, another major route of entry into the body for AH is through inhaling air laden with vehicle and factory exhaust. People who spend hours commuting in dense freeway traffic, professional drivers such as truck and taxi drivers in urban areas, and even those who live or work in heavily trafficked areas or near freeways or major streets are especially at risk for inhaling small but significant chronic levels of AH.

AH is also produced through the burning of tobacco.7 Thus, heavy cigarette smokers are also at risk of inhaling AH through the inhaled smoke. And while the amounts of AH inhaled through auto exhaust and cigarette smoke may be small compared to that from alcohol, research shows that low-dose chronic AH exposure may still be sufficient to gradually damage proteins, enzymes and other cellular structures in the brain and other organs.21

How Vinegar or Acetaldehyde Damages the Brain

There are many ways that acetaldehyde (AH) can gradually damage brain structure and function through chronic, low-dose AH exposure. The following are some of them.

Acetaldehyde alters red blood cell structure. It has been known since 1941 that AH easily combines with red blood cell membrane proteins to convert the red blood cells into a “time-release capsule” for AH, releasing the AH in the body far from the site where it attached to the red blood cell.3 As this happens, however, the membrane covering the red blood cell becomes stiffer.21 Yet in order to travel through the capillaries, which are the smallest blood vessels and which feed the trillions of individual cells, the red blood cell must be able to fold or deform. The average red blood cell diameter is 7 microns; yet a typical capillary is only 2 microns in diameter. Red blood cells stiffened through chronic AH exposure will have difficulty deforming sufficiently to pass through capillaries. Consequently, red blood cell-carried oxygen to many cells is reduced.3 (Our brains require 20% of all the oxygen we breathe!) In addition, the work of K.K. Tsuboi and colleagues has shown that AH forms stable combinations with hemoglobin in red blood cells. This reduces the ability of red blood cells to accept, hold, and transport oxygen through the bloodstream, which is their primary function.5 

Acetaldehyde decreases the ability of the protein tubulin to assemble into microtubules.6 Microtubules are long, thin, tube-like structures that serve several functions in the brain cell. They help provide structural support to the nerve cell, somewhat like girders in a bridge or a building, keeping the nerve cell and the dendrites semi-rigid. Dendrites are the feathery-looking extensions from the main body of the nerve cell which connect nerve cells to each other, with some neurons connecting through dendrites to as many as 100,000 other neurons. Microtubules also serve to transport nutrients and biochemical raw materials manufactured in the cell body to the dendrites. When this raw material transport is compromised, the dendrites will gradually atrophy and die off.

Two classic examples of brain pathology involving degeneration of the dendrites in humans are chronic alcoholic brain damage and Alzheimer’s disease.

Acetaldehyde induces a deficiency of vitamin B1. Thiamin, or Vitamin B1, is so critical to brain and nerve function it is often called the “nerve vitamin.” AH has a very strong tendency to combine with B1, as the work of Herbert Sprince, M.D. (discussed below) has shown.7 Unfortunately, in detoxifying AH through combination with it, B1 is destroyed. Moderately severe B1 deficiency in humans leads to a group of symptoms called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.9 This syndrome is characterized by mental confusion, poor memory, poor neuromuscular coordination, and visual disturbances. Its primary accepted cause is chronic alcoholism. B1 is also necessary for the production of ATP bioenergy in all body cells including the brain, and the brain must produce and use 20% of the body’s energy total, even while asleep. Vitamin B1 is also essential for production of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is one of the brain’s major neurotransmitters, facilitating optimal memory, mental focus and concentration, and learning. Alzheimer’s disease represents a rather extreme case of memory loss and impaired concentration due to destruction of acetylcholine-using brain cells. In a classic experiment reported in 1942, R.R. Williams and colleagues found that even mild B1 deficiency in humans continued over a long period of time (the experiment ran six months) produces symptoms including apathy, confusion, emotional instability, irritability, depression, feelings of impending doom, fatigue, insomnia, and headaches8 all symptoms of less-than-optimal brain function.

Below is a range of possible nutrient levels that may offer protection to those suffering from chronic AH toxicity.

Acetaldehyde induces deficiencies of niacin and NAD. Niacin (Vitamin B3) is present in the human body primarily in its coenzyme form, NAD.1 NAD is involved in the majority of steps in which sugar and fat are burned for energy in all cells.10 NAD is normally the most plentiful vitamin coenzyme in the human brain. NAD is important as a catalyst in the production of many key, brain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin. Neurotransmitters are the biochemicals that allow nerve cells to communicate with each other. NAD is also the coenzyme that activates alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase, the enzymes that break down alcohol and AH.11 Zinc is also required along with NAD to activate these two enzymes.12

Since the need for NAD in all cells is great, yet the supply is limited, NAD is normally recycled continually during cellular energy production. Yet, when NAD helps detoxify AH, this recycling of NAD is blocked, and an altered form of NAD called “NADH” accumulates, impairing cellular biochemistry in many ways.1, 21 Thus, chronic AH exposure may produce a mild, functional, niacin/NAD deficiency, even in a person consuming a so-called “balanced diet” which meets RDA levels of niacin intake.

Extreme niacin deficiency produces the classic nutritional disease Pellegra with dramatic symptoms, both physical and mental. Since niacin is needed in large amounts for optimal brain function, a mild niacin deficiency tends to produce mostly psychological symptoms. These symptoms may include feeling fearful, apprehensive, suspicious, and worrying excessively with a gloomy, downcast, angry and depressed outlook. Headaches, insomnia, depression, agitation, and inability to concentrate may also occur.13 This profile certainly applies to many chronic alcoholics and Candida patients, who obviously suffer from long-term, mild AH exposure.

Acetaldehyde reduces Acetyl Coenzyme A and impairs cellular energy production. Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) is one of the most critical vitamins for normal brain function. The active form of B5 is Coenzyme A. Coenzyme A in turn is combined with acetate in all cells to form Acetyl Coenzyme A. Acetyl Coenzyme A is perhaps the most pivotal single biochemical in all cellular biochemistry; both sugar and fat must be transformed into Acetyl Coenzyme A to power the Krebs’ cycle which produces 90% of all the energy used by every cell in the body, including brain cells.11 Unfortunately, for Acetyl Coenzyme A, however, AH has a strong affinity to combine with Acetyl Coenzyme A. The work of biochemist H.P. Ammon has shown that AH suppresses the activity of Acetyl Coenzyme A in a dose-dependent fashion. He has also demonstrated that the energy-producing activity of cells falls in parallel with the declining levels of Acetyl Coenzyme A as the concentration of AH increases.1 The brain use. 20% of all body energy for normal function. Acetyl Coenzyme A is also necessary for the production of acetylcholine, the memory, learning and concentration neurotransmitter.14

Acetaldehyde induces a deficiency of Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P). P5P is the major coenzyme necessary to form virtually all major brain neurotransmitters.10 It is involved in all transamination reactions, whereby cells may convert many different amino acids into each other to satisfy their ever-shifting amino acid needs.10 P5P is necessary to convert essential fatty acids into their final use forms, as well as to turn linoleic acid into the key, nerve cell-regulating biochemical, Prostaglandin E1.15 P5P helps regulate magnesium entry into cells,16 and the level of excitability of nerve cells is strongly dependent upon their magnesium level. P5P is also necessary to convert vitamin B3, niacin/niacinamide, into the active coenzyme form, NAD.17 Unfortunately for P5P (and we humans who are so dependent on it), AH is known to strongly combine with the protein portion of P5P enzymes in a way that displaces the P5P portion of the molecule. This subjects P5P to an increased rate of destruction and results in abnormally low blood and tissue levels of this coenzyme.1,18

Acetaldehyde unfavorably influences prostaglandin metabolism. Delta-6-Desaturase is the enzyme that converts the common fatty acid linoleic acid into gamma linolenic acid, which is totally absent from any typical diet. Gamma linolenic acid in turn is the only raw material that can be converted into prostaglandin E1. Prostaglandin E1 is a key regulatory biochemical for both nerve cells and the immune system. It also serves to regulate the production of the pro-inflammatory prostaglandin E2. Prostaglandin E1 prevents excessive production of prostaglandin E2 from the dietary fatty acid, arachidonic acid, which is plentiful in meat, poultry and dairy products. Researchers in prostaglandin biochemistry have discovered, however, that AH is a powerful deactivator of Delta-6-Desaturase.15 AH thus tends to suppress gamma linolenic acid production, which in turn suppresses prostaglandin E1 production. Low prostaglandin E1 production “takes the brakes off” production of prostaglandin E2 and a related compound, TXB2, increasing their levels far above normal. The published research of David Horrobin, M.D.,15 and psychiatrist Julian Lieb,19 has shown high levels of prostaglandin E2 and TXB2, coupled with low levels of prostaglandin E1, to be a major causal factor in some forms of depression.

Acetaldehyde promotes addiction to toxic substances. Perhaps one of the most surprising ways AH may alter normal brain function is due to its tendency to combine in the brain with two key neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin. When AH and dopamine combine, they form a condensation product called salsolinol. When AH combines with serotonin, another product called beta-carboline is formed. Salsolinol and beta-carboline are two of a group of inter-related and interconvertible compounds called tetrahydro-isoquinolines. The various tetrahydro-isoquinolines which both animal and human research have shown to occur at high levels in the brains, spinal fluids, and urine of chronic alcoholics are closely related in structure, function, and addictive power to opiates! Successfully detoxifying alcoholics have been shown to excrete especially high levels of these opiate-like chemicals in their urine. Thus, these AH-generated, opiate-like biochemicals may at least partly explain why alcoholics are so addicted to alcohol, cigarette smokers to cigarettes, and Candida-sufferers to sugar, since all three of these conditions promote chronic excessive body AH levels. And, like opiates, these tetrahydroisoquinoline biochemicals would tend to promote lethargy, mental cloudiness and fogginess, depression, apathy, inability to concentrate, etc. These, of course, are symptoms common to both alcoholism and Candidiasis, the two conditions which would tend to generate the highest chronic AH levels in the body.

The difficulties discussed above that are caused by chronic AH toxicity should indicate to the reader that AH has a significant ability to compromise brain function. A partial summary of AH’s damaging effects on brain function includes the following:

  •  Impaired memory
  •  Decreased ability to concentrate (“brain fog”)
  •  Depression
  •  Slowed reflexes
  •  Lethargy and apathy
  •  Heightened irritability
  •  Decreased mental energy
  •  Increased anxiety and panic reactions
  •  Decreased sensory acuity
  •  Increased tendency to alcohol, sugar, and cigarette addiction
  •  Decreased sex drive
  •  Increased PMS and breast swelling/tenderness in women.

How Nutrition Can Help
Fortunately, applied nutrition science offers some protection against chronic AH toxicity, even when it is not possible to completely avoid the four main offenders that promote AH in our bodies alcohol, Candida, cigarettes, and heavy auto exhaust.

Herbert Sprince, M.D. and his colleagues published many articles in the 1970’s detailing the results of their experiments which used various nutrients to protect rats from AH poisoning. Sprince fed a control group of rats an amount of AH sufficient to kill 90% of the control group in 72 hours. The experimental group of rats given the same amount of AH were also given various nutrients, either singly or in combination, that might detoxify the AH. After 72 hours, the death rate for rats given large oral doses of Vitamin C was only 27% (vs 90% in controls), 20% for rats given the sulfur amino acid L-cysteine, 10% for rats receiving Vitamin B1, and an amazing 0% for rats protected by N-acetyl cysteine or lipoic acid. A lower dose combination of C, B1 and either L-Cysteine or N-acetyl cysteine also gave near 0% death rates!7 But, the nutrient doses Sprince administered were rather gigantic compared to RDA levels of nutrients, being equivalent to multi-gram doses for humans. Fortunately, however, most people are not subjected to such high levels of AH, so lower doses of these nutrients would doubtless provide significant AH-detoxifying power when used on a long-term basis.

John Cleary, M.D. has published papers summarizing many doctors’ and researchers’ successful use of niacin (Vitamin B3) and zinc in alcohol and AH detoxification.1 Since the enzymes that break down alcohol and AH are both B311 and zinc-activated,12 this provides an obvious rationale for their protective use in chronic alcohol/AH toxicity situations. Finally, because chronic high tissue levels of AH impair the normal process of recycling the active form of B3 (NAD) for continual re-use,1 it is obvious why normal dietary levels of B3 might be insufficient to provide optimal brain B3 levels in chronic AH toxicity situations.
